Snow white retelling

For the year 9 passion projects I was in fairy tales and for the time frame we have been doing it we have learned about the Brothers Grimm and old fairy tales and whats the difference between a myth, legend a fable, and a fairy tale. We also learned how to write a retelling of our own. We chose a story to read through and then compared it to the newer versions of the story. We then wrote our own one but keeping the basic story line and just changing a few things up to make it different.

We all did a retelling of Cinderella after Miss Birtch read it aloud to the class as a practice for our real one. We then got to chose our own one and write another a retelling of that. I chose to do a retelling of the story Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. For my final project I decided I was going make my story into a book I drew illustrations and I named her Ruby instead.

Snow white retelling

Once upon a time in a busy city on the top floor of an apartment building lived a husband and his wife. Their names were Jasper and Meredith. They longed to have a little baby girl. Every night Meredith would sit on the rocking chair by the windowsill watching the rain trickle down telling Jasper about how she would love her daughter to have the fairest white skin like the snow on the tops of houses, crimson red lips, and jet black hair. One afternoon Meredith gave birth to a little girl who was everything she had ever asked for and more. They decided to name her Ruby due to the astonishing colour of her lips. Ruby had a very fun life with her mum and dad. They always made the most of their tiny apartment and to them it was more than enough. Countless nights were spent pillow fighting, building blanket forts and toasting marshmallows by the fireplace whilst cuddled up on the sofa.. When Ruby turned five her mother unfortunately passed away. Their house grew very dark and the fun life and happiness was stolen in the blink of an eye. On Ruby’s thirteenth birthday her and her dad moved houses. As they were driving their car broke down in front of this extraordinary palace. Jasper bravely went and knocked on the door to ask for a place to stay for the night. A queen opened the door and let them inside. Ruby and her dad ended up overstaying their visit longer than they had intended as the queen fell in love with Jasper. Ruby’s dad decided to ask the queen to marry him as he could not afford to live without her hand in marriage and without some of her wealthy heritage for him and Ruby. Ruby’s stepmom nicknamed her Snow white.

The queen was very suspicious and quite an odd woman. She was crazily obsessed with herself and being the most beautiful woman in all the land. She owned a lot of pets but the weird part was that they all talked and were forced to praise her and remind her of her beauty every day. Ruby’s step mother also had this massive mirror that when you talked to it, it spoke back but it was cursed so it was incapable of lying. When the animal's admiration wasn’t enough for the queen she would go to the mirror and ask these exact words “mirror, mirror on the wall who’s the fairest of them all”. Everytime the mirror would reply “You are the fairest of the land my queen”. On Ruby’s sixteenth birthday the queen asked the same question to the mirror but this time the reply was different. “Ruby, Ruby is the most beautiful person in the land with pale skin, bright red lips and jet black hair”. The queen raged at the idea of this and jealousy boiled through her skin. The queen was furious and ordered her pet wolf to hunt down Snow white and kill her. One day when snow white was skipping around in the forest she was approached by a big angry looking wolf. In terror she stepped backwards tripping over a tree stump and falling backwards. The wolf pounced on her but after looking into her eyes he fell in love with Snow white and didn’t have the guts to kill her. So instead he introduced himself to her and warned her about the queen and what she had planned to do. The wolf’s name was Leo.

Snow white ran deep into the forest until she got tired and realized that the sun was slowly setting so she decided to sit down. As she was sitting on a log catching her breath she noticed a cute little cottage surrounded by mushrooms and flowers and a tire swing. She saw a little man coming out of the house then another man followed after and another and another, each led out in a single file line following after the first. Snow white quickly hid behind the log and watched. In the end there were a total of seven tiny men. They all walked out into the woods humming and singing a song. She made sure that they were long gone and then came out from behind the log and decided to have a look around their house. She struggled a bit to get through the tiny door but managed to get herself through. She looks around the very cosy cottage and sees seven little doors each with a name engraved in it. Sleepy, sneezy, bashful, happy, grumpy, dopey, and doc who had the biggest bed so Snow white assumed he must've been the leader. There was this massive rocking chair beside the window and Snow white sat in it and dozed off in a dream about her mother and father and everything they used to do together as a family. Suddenly seven little men barged through the door one after the other. They noticed Snow white and were amazed by the beautiful young lady asleep in their chair. When she awoke she explained everything to them and they felt sorry for the young girl and they kindly offered her a place to stay in their small cottage. She happily accepted and made a promise to them that she would always help out with the chores and work. The first chore they did was make an extension on the door so she could come and go more easily through the house.

Many years later up in the castle the queen once again said her famous saying to the magic mirror but in her shock the mirror replied with “ You are not the fairest in the land my queen, a beautiful young lady by the name of Ruby, holds the title”. The queen was astonished and went pale in the face. She had been betrayed and lied to by her own animal. When she went to see the wolf he was happy to hear she was still alive and well but he was sentenced with a punishment of being human. The queen needed to find Snow white so she could kill her herself but she didn’t know how she ever would. She went into Snow’s old room and grabbed a handkerchief from her wardrobe and ordered the wolf to sniff it and track her scent through the forest. When they arrived at the cottage the queen transformed herself and Leo into disguise. She then had to teach Leo how to walk probably. After they were all properly disguised they went and knocked on the door. Little did the queen know that Leo had a different plan. When Snow white opened the door the queen tried so desperately to stay in character and not let the jealousy show through. The queen pretended to be Leo’s wife and told Snow that they were bakers and wanted to bring her some of their famous cupcakes. Snow white didn’t want to be rude so she took a cupcake from the plate. Little did she know the queen had poisoned half the batch. As Snow white took a bite of the cupcake she dropped to the floor. Leo suggested that as a celebration of her death him and the queen shall eat the remaining cupcakes. The queen was so happy that she forgot all about the poisonous cupcakes and she ate it cluelessly and then she too dropped to the floor.

Leo; still being human, walked over to Snow whites lifeless body and he and the seven men lifted her up and placed her into a beautiful clear casket filled with flowers and a silk pillow. As they put her casket down in the forest Leo bent down and kissed her softly on the lips and suddenly she was revived and everyone was happy. Leo was so confused but then remembered that only half the batter of cupcakes was deathly poisonous and some of them were just faintly poisoned and the rest were safe. Leo came to the conclusion that she must’ve gotten the wrong cupcake and was just put into a deep sleep. As she stood out from the casket and everyone wiped away the last of their tears Leo asked Snow white to be his bride and she said yes. The little men waved their goodbyes and Snow thanked them for their kindness and gave them all a small kiss on the head. Snow white and Leo went back to the castle and got all of Snow's old things and decided to build their house in the forest and become neighbours with the seven little men. They all lived happily ever after the end.

Business & Enterprise

 1) Describe the kete of business and enterprise.

We had to do a lot of jobs like making a poster finishing the product writing our market plan, changing our ideas making labels and all of the budgeting and planning.

2)what were your learnings?

We learnt how to write a proper funding letter and how to write it appropriately. Being a CEO is a lot harder than I thought. It took a lot of time and effort and a lot of patience.

3) How important were decisions that you made?

It was very important to chose a good group to work with where everyone is on board and wants to contribute and be a part of it. We had to change a few of our ideas because they didn't work out budget wise and for other reasons but we still made a good product in the end.

4) Do you think you were successful and what evidence do you have to make that judgement?

Yes I do think that my group was quite successful because we made a complete product and it turned out really well and we made a lot of sales.

5) Do you believe you upheld the CARR values of our school on market day and explain your answer.

Yes I believe that me and my group showed good CARR values throughout the whole process of making our product and on market day we were very respectful and kind to our customers.

Cinderella retelling

Once upon a time in a beautiful cottage deep in the forest a baby was born. Her name was Bella. As Bella grew older her mum got very sick and sadly passed away. Her dad grew very sad and stayed in bed all day everyday, leaving Bella with a lot of responsibilities to do around the house and outside on the farm. She loved to be around animals and outside in the warm evening sun. Her closet filled top to bottom with the finest silk dresses and stunning ball gowns hand sewn by her mother, for they were quite wealthy and could afford the nicest materials. One day her father decided to finally go outside and take the crops and food out to town to sell at the markets. He got on their horse, waved goodbye to Bella and began the long journey to town. As Bella sat and waited the night grew dark and very cold, grey clouds started rolling in over the tops of the trees. She ran to the shelter of her home and waited for the storm to pass. Early that morning she suddenly awoke from her sleep hoping to see her father safely home but he was nowhere to be found. She ran out to the farm and cried. Bella looked out into the forest and saw the figure of a horse. She prayed hoping her dad was on the back, but when the horse came into the light she realised it was nothing but alone.

She went to bed that night drowned in her own tears. In the morning she got a letter from her anonymous auntie she knew nothing about. It was an invitation letter to go and stay with them in their house out in the country. So Bella packed all of her things that would fit in her little suitcase. She managed to pack all of the important things. She got on her horse and went to town to sell the last of the crops and then with the money she earned she paid for a taxi. Bella said her goodbyes to her beloved horse and watched as the image of her horse grew smaller and smaller until it was nothing but a spec. She got to the address of her aunties house and grabbed her things, thanked the taxi driver and went and knocked on the door. She heard loud rummaging around the house before her auntie and two girls opened the door and let her inside. The two girls named Priscilla and Chelsea were Bella’s cousins. They despised Bella and envied her beauty so much that they treated her very poorly. Chelsea and Priscilla went through her stuff and tore up Bella’s gowns and stole her dresses to keep for themselves. They lived in a very small house on top of their factory. They had a shoe making business. Bella’s auntie didn’t like Bella very much and as a result of that she made her sleep in the basement in the factory. Soon after her cousins started calling her basement Bella.

Bella worked long hours in the factory and was treated very unfairly. Down in the factory there was a little tiny vent that led into the house. One night Bella listened carefully to the gossip going on upstairs. Priscilla and Chelsea were arguing over the newspaper headline that read “The Farmer’s Son Is Looking For A Bride”. There was to be a massive market day and a ball at the town hall. Bella got so excited and couldn’t wait to go. She was so over the top with excitement that she sprung off her mattress and ran over the nearest sewing machine. Bella was quite talented at sewing and making clothing items as her mother had taught her when she was younger. She found some old fabric scraps and had a few things of her own that she managed to save from her evil cousins. She stitched and tucked and sewed the night away. When daylight hit she was just adding on a few finishing touches to her beautiful gown. Suddenly fear shot through her heart as she heard footsteps crashing down into the factory. She knew who it was instantly and desperately tried to hide her dress from the sight of her cousins. The basement door flung open but Bella managed to hide it just in time. Priscilla and Chelsea were prancing around in their dresses mocking Bella in her nightie.A few minutes later her auntie came down the stairs. The sound of her heels clacking against the stairs made Bella very nervous. Bella’s Auntie gathered up Priscilla and Chelsea and all of their things and headed up into the house. Bella followed after them and asked to go with them to the ball. They laughed in mockery and took her as a joke. Her auntie said “you shall not join us unless you have swept the house top to bottom and made over 150 pairs of shoes.” Priscilla and Chelsea couldn’t contain their laughter and cracked up on the floor making jokes.

Moments later the house was silent as they had already left without her. Bella sat in a slump knowing it was impossible. As she swept the house tears fell from her eyes and a little bird flew through the window and sat on top of the fireplace and sang to her. Bella made a wish and talked to the bird. Longing ever so hopelessly to go to the ball. She heard the voice of a sweet whisper in her ear saying “You will go to the ball and you will wear your beautiful dress” Bella looked around and to her amazement a small fairy was standing on her shoulder. Bella ran and went to get changed. The fairy did her hair in a swirled up bun and put little clips in her hair. She gave Bella the most beautiful purse and these golden slippers. “How will I get there though?” the fairy led her out to the garden and there in the garden was an amazing carriage and a familiar face of the horse in the front. It was her horse that she had sold the day she left. She stepped into the carriage. The carriage went up and down and tilted on the uneven footpath. They finally made it to the town hall. Bella made a magnificent entrance that got heads turning everywhere including the rich farmer. He came to greet her out of the carriage and he held out his hand for her to hold. As she stepped out of the carriage, all of the lady’s watched in envy. Bella caught a glimpse of her cousins and aunt and prayed they wouldn’t recognise her. Everyone was invited into the hall. The farmer said, “would you like to dance with me?” and she gladly agreed and took his hand and danced. He introduced himself to her; his name was Harry.

They danced the night away under the light of the big full moon.  They laughed and talked and got to know one another. As the moon slowly started turning into the morning sun Bella suddenly realised the time and that most of the people from the ball were long gone. She had been so dazed by the charming farmer that she had forgotten all about her family and that they would already be on their way home and that when they got there they would realise that she wasn’t there. Bella apologized to Harry and released her grasp from him. She spun round to try and leave but he grabbed her hand, and pulled her in for a goodbye kiss. She ran off afterwards blushing all the way home. Harry was so worried he would never see her again. As the sun began to rise he saw a shimmer of something hidden in the grass he rushed over and to his surprise it was Bella’s purse.

When Bella arrived home the fairy appeared on her shoulder and spun in circles above Bella’s head magically changing her outfit. She ran inside and when she got downstairs into the factory there were birds and bunnies and beavers and all sorts working away. They were making all 150 pairs of shoes that Bella was ordered to do but couldn't possibly do it by herself. Suddenly she heard the sound of her cousins angrily barging through the door. All of the animals quickly vanished but all of the shoes were finished. Bella’s auntie was furious that her daughter’s didn’t get to dance with the farmer she kept going on about this mystery girl. Bella quietly giggled. Then there was another knock on the door and to their surprise it was Harry he was holding Bella’s purse in his hand. Little did Bella know that the fairy had secretly put in their address on the inside of the purse. When Harry saw Bella he didn't really recognise her. Chelsea and Priscilla tried so desperately to convince him that it was them who danced with him, but he knew deep down it wasn’t right. He came closer to Bella and stared into her eyes. He said “This is her, this is the beautiful girl I danced with last night. You must be Bella”. Bella was shocked that he knew her name but she reluctantly replied “yes that is me” he took her hand and kissed it gently. He asked Bella if she would be his bride and she agreed. They got on the back of his horse and rode away. They had a beautiful wedding underneath an oak tree on their farm. Surrounded by animals of all kinds and the lovely chirping and singing of the birds amongst the trees. They lived happily ever after.

Rapunzel

 1. Why do you think texts change overtime?

The original fairy tales written by the Grimm brothers were not as child appropriate as they had some unsuitable things in it. For example in the original telling of the beloved story of Rapunzel the prince got Rapunzel pregnant and leapt off the tower piercing his eyes in a thorn bush. The story we know now has been changed as to not scare off the young readers.

2. How come each version we have read of Rapunzel is different, even though they have been written by the same authors?

They wrote many copies of the same books and kept adding changes to each copy to make it more and more suitable and more happy and sweet for little children.

3. What was the same or different in the two versions you read?

In the version of Rapunzel that was read aloud to us when the enchantress finds out that Rapunzel has been sneaking a guy up to the tower she banished her in to the forest but in the version I read myself she was banished to a dessert.
